With a length of 18 centimeters, the Lanius cristatus (brown shrike) has black tip-hooked stubby beak, dull brown color on the back, and dark brown color on the wings and tail feathers. The male bird has wide and long black eye lines, white color on the cheeks and throat, and light brown color below the chest; while the female bird has thinner eye lines, white brow lines, and mixed fine scaly stripes on the abdomen. It shows up on the smooth fields and open areas. Loving to perch on protruding object in the open, the brown shrike often lets out coarse continuous sounds as well as melodious sounds.
