With a length of 36 centimeters, the ixobrychus sinensis (yellow bittern) is a small-size yellow brown egret with flight feathers and black tail feathers. When flying, its wide wings can be easily seen. The male bird has black color on the head; while the female bird has brown color on the head, dark brown spots on the back, and brown vertical stripes from the neck to the chest. It shows up singly or in pairs in the underbrush of watery areas in swamps and paddy fields of the plains and low elevation areas. It often stands still for a long time by the water. Living alone in hidden underbrush, the yellow bittern holds on to the lower part of the grass stems, waiting for its opportunity to catch and feed on the insects. When doing the vigilance, it often erects its head and neck. Holding still in the grass for a long time to mimic the surroundings.
