The hypothymis azurea (black-naped blue monarch) has a length of 15 centimeters. The male bird has blue color on the back and upper chest, black color on the inside base of upper beak, black spots on the rear of the head, a black fine horizontal stripe on the neck, and ash gray below the abdomen; while the female has roughly dull brown color with a hint of light blue on the back, and black color on the rear of the head and the neck. It shows up in the woods singly or in pairs at places from the plains to low elevation areas. It is highly so vigilant during breeding seasons that it will drive away other bird species. Often letting out “hua, hua, hua” sounds, the Formosan Black-naped Blue Flycatcher forms the habit of catching its preys at fixed places.
