With a length of 17 centimeters, the hirundo rustica (barn swallow) has black back, black tail feathers with deep bifurcation and half-moon white spots on the lower part, crimson shade on the brow and throat, black horizontal stripes on the upper chest, and white shade on the abdomen. Among the Hirundinidae family in Taiwan, large herds of them are transient visitants coming to Taiwan in spring and fall, with only a small proportion resident birds. The Hirundo rustica often passes at low altitude to forage. It builds its nest at the corner near the wall roof, with the shape like a half bowl.
